Newby lured by ambition!

Morecambe boss Adam Lakeland believes the signing of winger Elliot Newby highlights the ambition of the Shrimps as they look to recover from back-to-back relegations, writes Neil Harvey.

The 30-year-old arrives at the Mazuma Mobile Stadium with a wealth of experience across both the EFL and National League, having most recently represented hometown club Barrow in League Two.

Newby won promotion from National League North with Chorley before joining Stockport County and adding a National League title to his honours list.

Loan spells at Lakeland’s former club FC Halifax Town and Altrincham led to a second spell at Barrow where he spent three seasons, making over 100 appearances in the EFL.

“I’m delighted to bring Elliot to Morecambe,” said Lakeland, who also brought in former Preston, FC Halifax and Chester midfielder Lewis Leigh on a two-year deal this week.

“Having played the past couple of seasons in the EFL, we are adding yet more quality to our group, a player who is proven above the level we are going to be playing at next season.

“Elliot has achieved promotion out of this league previously, bringing a wealth of experience with him. I like how direct he is, how aggressive he likes to be with the ball at his feet, the way he carries the ball, and with two good feet, he will hopefully provide another source of goals for us in the form of both assists and goals.

“He bought into our ambition, the project and challenge ahead of us, and I look forward to working with him.”

Newby admitted Lakeland’s ambitions for the club this season, and beyond, played a key part in him climbing on board.

“I’m delighted,” he said. “It’s happened quite fast really, but I’m buzzing to be here and can’t wait to get going.

“I met with Adam in the off-season and had a really good conversation with him. You could see his ambition for the club straight away and speaking about how I would fit into that really excited me.

“All in all, it ticks a lot of boxes for what I want to do from a football perspective.

“By bringing Adam in and with the signings the club have made, you can tell they really want to push on and turn over a new leaf.”
