South Shields manager Ian Watson has left the club to take charge of National League play-off final winners Rochdale.
Watson departs Mariners Park alongside assistant Carl Magnay after leading the side to a historic campaign that saw them finish second in National League North with a club-record 95 points.
Despite missing out on promotion with a 2-0 defeat to Kidderminster Harriers in the promotion final, the Mariners enjoyed their highest finish since its reform under chairman Geoff Thompson.
Watson, as a result, has attracted interest from higher up the pyramid, which has ultimately paved the way for his move to Spotland on a three-year deal after Jimmy McNulty departed for another EFL side in Stockport County.

Disappointed
A statement from the club read: Shields statement “South Shields FC can confirm that head coach Ian Watson and assistant head coach Carl Magnay have departed the club to join League Two side Rochdale FC.
“While disappointed to see them leave, the club is incredibly proud to have played a part in helping Ian and Carl progress further up the football pyramid.
“Their move is recognition of the outstanding work carried out during a historic season for the Mariners, which saw the club achieve its highest-ever finish since reform with 95 points and a second-place finish in the Enterprise National League North.
“Following such a successful campaign, interest from higher levels of the game was inevitable, and we are proud to have provided the platform for both Ian and Carl to showcase their talents and take the next step in their careers.
“Everyone at South Shields FC thanks Ian and Carl for their commitment and wishes them every success for the future.
“The club will now begin the process of appointing a new management team ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Excited
The former Gateshead, MK Dons and Carlisle United assistant manager enjoyed an outstanding first season at South Shields after replacing Elliott Dickman last summer.
Watson quickly made his mark at the club, overseeing a significant squad overhaul that pushed AFC Fylde all the way in a title race that was only settled on the final day.
In his first words as the new Rochdale boss, he said: “I am so excited to become a part of this amazing football club.
“The club really aligns with me as a person and also shares the same beliefs in terms of the game model.
“The connection between the football club and the supporters is very special. I’m looking forward to creating some amazing moments with you all.”
Watson also issued an emotional farewell message to supporters following confirmation of his departure.
He said: “I just want to say thank you to all the supporters for making my time at South Shields so special.
“The memories we shared together will live with me forever.
“You stood next to me in the toughest moment of my life and I will never forget this. Thank you all so much.”

Contingency plan
The 40-year-old’s departure comes after an international consortium led by ORY Investment completed the acquisition of a majority stake in South Shields at the end of last month.
Thompson remains in place as club chairman as the North East outfit enters a new era on and off the pitch.
A contingency plan is reportedly already in place, with former Newcastle United defender Mike Williamson among the leading contenders to succeed Watson in the dugout.
Williamson currently serves as South Shields’ director of performance and culture.
