Torquay United have moved swiftly to replace Gary Owers and have named Gary Johnson as their new manger.
Owers was axed yesterday after the Gulls poor start in the National League South which sees them sit 14th, ten points behind leaders Woking.
Johnson has plenty of Non-League experience and guided both Yeovil and Cheltenham to Conference titles.
In a statement on the club’s website, chairman Clarke Osbourne said: “Following our discussions with Gary Owers and decision that we should part company, we have worked hard and at a pace to find a coach able and motivated to find that winning formula and take this Club to promotion. I am delighted to announce that we have been able to attract someone of Gary Johnson’s proven ability and clear determination.
“Equally as important, I believe that Gary Johnson will add further to the excellent work of building our football infrastructure and youth programme.
“Gary J, as he will have to be known to avoid the confusion with Gary O, will be meeting the players and staff at the Club this morning and I am sure will be hard at work by lunchtime.
“I know that everyone is going to give him a warm welcome to Torquay United.”
Johnson added: “It has been a crazy 36 hours in meeting Clarke Osborne and his team, understanding the Club, understanding his ambition and resource and seeing the determination to succeed.
“I have been really impressed with the plans to equip Torquay United with the facilities and finance to challenge in the football league and I believe that I can lead the Club back to Division 2 and beyond. It is for these reasons that I have chosen to take up this challenge.
“It’s not going to be easy but a strong professional organisation and determined, resourceful owners provide the tools to succeed.
“I am really looking forward, to meeting everyone and to this challenge. Much work to be done!”
