Gary Johnson wants Torquay United to keep their winning habit after moving to the top of the National League South.
The Gulls continued their impressive form with a 2-0 win at promotion rivals Dartford last night.
Since his appointment in September, the former Cheltenham Town boss is yet to taste defeat in the league and two late goals from Ruairi Keating and Jamie Reid moved Johnson’s side two points clear at the top.
“It’s a bit early, I’d rather it was in March!” he told the club’s website. “You’re there to be shot at now. do you fight harder as the champions or the challenger? We’ve got to make sure we don’t let anybody knock us off our perch if we can help it. It’s been a great little run.
“The boys showed us we can ride our luck, all good teams ride their luck, in the first half when they had a couple of chances. We finished strong and got two good quality goals.
“There’s still a couple of teams who have game sin hand on us. Saturday is another big game and that will put a little bit of distance between us. Winning does become a habit and we’ve got to keep it.”
Torquay host high-flying Welling United at Plainmoor on Saturday.
Elsewhere in National South, Concord Rangers hammered Hampton and Richmond 4-0. Liam Nash netted a brace with Jack Midson and Sam Blackman netting one each.
