Welling United cut costs with player and staff departures

Steve King will honour his two-year contract as manager of Welling after cuts to the playing budget.
The Wings are in the National League South promotion hunt, but have been forced to reduce costs.
Early exits in the FA Cup and Trophy along with reduced sponsorship and low crowds has forced King and chairman Mark Goldberg into making some tough decisions.
Striker Matt Paterson and midfielder John-Paul Kissock have both joined Havant and Whitehawk respectively while Zac Newton has linked up with Worthing on loan.
King has also seen Yannis Ambroisine and Richard Orlu depart on loan to Whitehawk and Hampton in recent weeks with coach Osei Sankofa and goalkeeping coach Larry Raji part of the cull too.
“There's no ill feelings at all,” King told Kent Online. “I signed a two-year contract, I'm expected to honour that and I will honour that.
“Going forward it is going to be tougher, I understand that. I bought into it.
“When you go into jobs and you have a number of injuries at the beginning and the club allows you to sign players to cover those positions, when everyone's fit you can't carry the size of squad that we had.
“We've had to trim it, we've maybe trimmed it in my personal opinion a little bit too much. But we have to live within our means, and I get that 100 per cent.
“It's been a really tough week, the toughest since I've been at the club – having to get rid of people and get rid of my staff that have worked with me for a long time.That's been tough. We had to do what we had to do.
“We had to reduce the budget down. The easiest and quickest way is the most expensive players had to go.
“It's not something we wanted to happen. We know that we have to live within our means which is correct.
“No-one wants to see us not have a football club so we have to work together.
“Me and Mark (Goldberg, chairman) worked together to reduce the budget where we needed to but to lose eight people in one throw, with staff included, is really tough.
“We've got through it. The only problem when that happens is you've got to worry if you get injuries, we're going to be threadbare.”
