Torquay United appointed Jimmy Ball as their new manager on Wednesday following what the club described as a “rigorous and considered” recruitment process.
The National League South club confirmed the appointment on Wednesday evening.
Ball arrives at Plainmoor with an established coaching CV, having worked at Forest Green Rovers, Stevenage, Portsmouth and Stoke City.
He most recently enjoyed a successful managerial spell with AFC Totton.

Stand-out candidate
Ball is also the son of the late 1966 England World Cup winner, Alan Ball.
He replaces veteran boss and Torquay board advisor Neil Warnock, who took interim charge following the dismissal of Paul Wotton.
“I’m absolutely delighted to be joining Torquay United,” the 50-year-old told the club’s official website.
“This is a football club with a big history, a big heart and a proud legacy, and one that means so much to its area and its supporters.
“To be given the opportunity to become manager of Torquay United is a fantastic moment in my career and a real honour.
“I know this squad, I respect this squad, and I’ve done battle with them, so I know the talent that is already in the building.
“I’m excited to get started and do everything I can to help bring this club the success it deserves.”

Stand-out candidate
The Gulls say they received a high volume of applications, highlighting the opportunity’s scale and the club’s appeal.
However, Ball quickly emerged as the leading choice.
Co-chairman Mark Bowes-Cavanagh added: “We were hugely encouraged by the volume and quality of candidates who wanted to become Torquay United manager, but Jimmy stood out.
“He interviewed exceptionally well and gave us real confidence in his vision, his leadership and his values.
“He showed a really intelligent understanding of how to build relationships with players, improve individuals and create the right culture around the group.
“Just as importantly, he understands the balance between ambition on the pitch and the need to operate within a sustainable structure off it.
“We believe Jimmy is a very strong fit for this football club and we are delighted to welcome him to Torquay United.”

Immediate focus
Torquay have mounted a strong promotion push this campaign and currently sit fifth, 10 points behind leaders Dorking Wanderers.
This weekend’s clash with Dagenham & Redbridge will be Ball’s first game in charge.
His appointment follows an impressive four-year spell with AFC Totton, where he achieved two promotions in three seasons.
The Stags announced that Scott Rendell and director of football Dave Wright would be caretakers in the interim.
The club have enjoyed a solid start to life at Step 2 and currently sit 13th in the table.
Chairman Kevin Hebenton said: “Since joining the club in 2022, Jimmy has built a formidable reputation, guiding the team and the club to two promotions in just three seasons.
“His achievements will forever be recorded in the history of AFC Totton. The club will always be grateful for the energy, dedication, and passion he brought in helping lead us to the highest league position in our 140-year history.
“On behalf of the board of directors and everyone associated with AFC Totton, I would like to sincerely thank Jimmy for his outstanding contribution during his time at the club and wish him every success in the next chapter of his managerial career with Torquay United Football Club.”
Torquay sacked Wotton after a five-game winless run stalled their progress. Warnock stepped up for four matches and delivered two wins, one draw and one defeat.
Ball now has eight games remaining to secure a strong finish and cement Torquay’s play-off position.
