■BATTLINGGosport went close to claiming a point against a Hitchin side with one eye on Monday’s League Cup semi-final.
A late break saw a shot from Joel Jackson bounce down off the Hitchin bar. There was still time for Canary defender Dan Webb to clear off the line.
Hitchin got off to the perfect start on nine minutes. Trey Charles’ shot was blocked but fell to Robbie Burns. Despite Gosport’s appeals for offside, he kept his cool to slot home.
