A SECOND-HALF header by Hungerford centre-back Luke Softley secured the three points in a real battle at Bulpit Lane.
Hungerford gave a debut to Swindon loanee keeper Redman Evans but the debutant had little to do.
The hosts took the lead in the first 10 minutes when Louis McGrory converted a penalty past Basingstoke keeper Simon Grant.
The game continued with a battle on a soaking pitch that lacked real quality.
