Ilkeston add ex-Scotland and Birmingham assistant to coaching staff

ILKESTON have secured another major coup by luring former Scotland and Birmingham City assistant manager Andy Watson to the club.

Watson joins the Robins as technical director/assistant-manager to UEFA Pro Licence coach Gavin Strachan – son of Scotland boss Gordon – who was appointed last month.

The 55-year-old assisted Alex McLeish at Motherwell, Hibernian, Rangers, Scotland and Birmingham City. He helped mastermind Scotland's famous 1-0 win in France in 2007 as well as Birmingham's Carling Cup final victory over Arsenal in 2011.

But now he's looking forward to his new role at the New Manor Ground with the NPL Premier Robins.

Watson said: “Gavin rang me and explained what was happening here at Ilkeston and would I be interested in joining him as his assistant.

“It sounded like a great opportunity and I wanted to be part of it.”

As a player, Watson was part of Sir Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen side of 1983 that beat Real Madrid to lift the European Cup Winners Cup. He was also capped by Scotland U21s.

Meanwhile, the Robins have also brought in a new fitness coach in the shape of Marc Lindsey.

He previously worked alongside Strachan at Peterborough United and the new man said: “After I left Peterborough I went on to do consultation work at West Bromwich Albion with the U18s and U21s.

“Whilst working there I got a call from Gavin asking me if I'd like to come to work at Ilkeston. The opportunity to work with Gavin again and the set up at Ilkeston was a big part of me coming here.”
