Ashton United players investigated by The FA for betting

have confirmed that “several” of their squad from last season are being investigated by the Association in relation to football betting.

The Robins finished third in the NPL Premier last season before losing out to local rivals in the play-off semi-final.

The FA released new betting rules last August which prevented players from Steps 1-4 from any betting on any football matches.

“Participants covered by the ban will be prohibited from betting, either directly or indirectly, on any football match or competition that takes place anywhere in the world,” the governing body said at the time.

From Steps 5 and below, “no participant can bet on a match or competition in which they are involved that season, or which they can influence, or any other football-related matter concerning the league that they play in.”

Ashton this morning released a statement  saying that members of last season's squad under joint-bosses Paul Phillips and Steve Halford are being investigated.

“Ashton United has been advised by the that several members of last season's playing squad are subject to investigation in respect of betting on football matches,” the club said.

“The club is cooperating fully with the investigation and until such time as that investigation is concluded there will be no further statements on the matter.”
