KENDAL TOWN chairman Haydon Munslow has quit after six years at the club due to “a steady physical, verbal and on-line onslaught”.

Munslow has helped develop the Mintcakes’ first team as well as ladies side and youth system, with the club become a central hub of the community.

George Gudgeon has been named acting chairman after Munslow’s resignation with the outgoing chief saying his position was “untenable”.

“I find my position as an elected, unpaid, voluntary club official reliant on the ongoing support, assistance and goodwill of all the current members as untenable,” he said.

“In the face of a persistent and vicious personal campaign against me and my family, largely orchestrated from the shadows by disaffected former club officials and management committee members, I cannot myself further move the club forward.

“Longstanding misplaced personal loyalties to inadequate, insincere individuals and a desire for cosy informality seems to be more important to some than basic business sense, following rules, making professional progression and just telling the truth.

“A few honest friends within the club have provided their contentious backing. The rest have pulled back seemingly in a joint mindless acceptance to allow the club slowly fail, restoring the ‘social club’ led activities they enjoy and allowing back in those who would use the clubhouse and pitch for their own selfish ends.

“My further financial and business support is not withdrawn lightly. I would like to thank all those inside and outside the club who backed my vision of building a senior community based men’s and ladies club built upwards from a solid youth system allowing direct local access to all talented players with commitment.

“The historic debt is cleared, the clubhouse and car park is won back, and all the various competing teams are all in place doing well. My exit as chairman will allow others to come forward.

“They will see the genuine opportunities to build through helping young local people develop. I’m sure following an energetic and timely reorganisation they will steadily move the club to new levels.”
