SOUTH Shields issued a timely reminder to the early pacesetters that they would again be a force this season.
They inflicted Matlock’s first defeat of the season and deserved it with the hosts guilty of showing the Mariners too much respect until the final quarter of the contest.
Matlock rallied in the last 25 minutes but by then the damage had been done. Jon Shaw struck first, immediately after the interval, before Robert Briggs scored from the spot just before the hour-mark.
