PFA plaque

MANCHESTER United and England legend Bryan Robson will unveil a special Professional Footballers’ Association plaque in honour of Bert Whalley at Stalybridge Celtic this week.

Robson will be joined by Whalley’s granddaughter Lindsay Vare, among others, for the ceremony at 6pm on Tuesday at Bower Fold.

Whalley played for both Stalybridge Celtic and Manchester United before being appointed by legendary manager Matt Busby as a coach at Old Trafford.

Born in Ashtonunder-Lyne, Whalley was a victim of the Munich air disaster on February 6, 1958, aged 44.

A tribute match between Stalybridge Celtic and Manchester United U23s will take place at 7.45pm after the unveiling.
