WIDNES’ pursuit of teams ahead of them in the race to beat the drop gathered pace thanks to Connor McCarthy’s winner at Witton.
His looping header from substitute Jay Roberts’ cross secured a third victory in the past four outings for Michael Ellison’s fast-improving side. They established a lead after 19 minutes when Sean Miller reacted swiftly to sweep in a rebound after Albion keeper Ollie Martin diverted Jack Byrne’s header onto the bar.
