■ WIDNES ended their season with a narrow victory over 1874 Northwich yesterday.
The Whites knew they were finishing 17th no matter the outcome of this game, but three points ensures that Michael Ellison’s side are the best of the bottom four finishers in Step 4.
They dominated the first half with over a dozen attempts on goal but struggled to truly test Shea Callister.
Widnes took a deserved lead after 65 minutes with Laurence Smith arrowing a powerful effort into the bottom left-hand corner.
