■ NEWTON Aycliffe earned a valuable three points in their fight for survival. A single goal from Colin Larkin just before half-time proved to be the difference.
It was Larkin who nearly took an early lead for Aycliffe but his header from a right wing cross went wide.
Spartans came more into the game as the half progressed and came close when a Paul Van-Zandvliet shot from outside the box hit the crossbar. The visitors had another chance shortly after but Jack Vaulks effort flew over.
