NEVILLE POWELL has been sacked as manager of Welsh Premier side Bangor City after nine years in charge following a “difficult pre-season”.
The Citizens' decision brings an end to a successful spell for Bangor under the guidance of former Connah's Quay boss Powell.
During his time in charge, the club won three consecutive Welsh Cups as well as the Welsh Premier title in 2010-11 before The New Saints' domination.
The past two seasons have been more difficult for Bangor, finishing tenth and ninth respectively in the 12-team league, and the club's new consortium have decided it's time for a change.
The Citizens, who were taken over by a Chester-based group in June headed by Ivor Jenkins, have targeted a title tilt and are now searching for a new boss with just a week to go until the new season.
A club statement read: “The club would like to thank Neville for all the hard work he has done over the years and wish him well in the future.
“Bangor City would like to add that they will honour Neville with a testimonial match towards the end of the current season.
“A replacement will be announced at the earliest opportunity as the club seek to bring stability on the playing side of the club after a difficult pre-season build up.”
Despite the decision, Powell says he holds no grudges against the club, telling the Daily Post: “The club has new owners, they want to bring in their own people, and I respect that.
“I've had a great nine years at the club. I've worked with some great people, managed some great players and enjoyed the company of some wonderful supporters.
“I've been in football all my life and will return in the future, but for now I'll take a break. I wish Bangor City all the best.”
