POLICE are investigating after allegations of racist abuse were made following Barrow’s National League fixture against Altrincham on Saturday.

It’s alleged that Alty midfielder Josh Ginnelly, currently on loan from Championship club Burnley, was subject of a racist remark from the Ray Wilkie stand at Holker Street.

Ginnelly reported the incident to a match official and it has now been passed on to the Football Association as well as Cumbria Police.

Football intelligence officer for Barrow, PC Craig Barrass, was at Holker Street and told the North-West Evening Mail: “He (Ginnelly) reported it to the officials so they have reported it to the FA. We take [allegations] seriously as does the club.”

Barrow, meanwhile, tweeted: “The club are shocked to hear about this incident and deplore any kind of racist or discriminatory behaviour.”

Barrow police added: “Anybody with information on any racial abuse towards Altrincham player Josh Ginnelly at Barrow today (Saturday), please contact us on 101.”
