Midfielder Simon Heslop signs for hometown club York City

EXPERIENCED midfielder Simon Heslop has signed for hometown club after turning down a new contract at .

The 29-year-old has signed a two-year deal with the Minstermen as they look to bounce straight back into the League following relegation from League Two last season.

Heslop started his career with Barnsley but struggled to get first team opportunities and spent time on loan at the likes of Kidderminster, , Halifax and Luton.

Following his exit from Barnsley in 2010, Heslop enjoyed three seasons at Oxford United, making over 100 appearances for the U's.

A year in League One with Stevenage followed before a move to Mansfield Town, where he spent the 2014-15 campaign.

Heslop dropped back into and started last season with Torquay before leaving in January after his short-term deal expired.

He was snapped up by Wrexham boss and was a constant fixture in the Dragons' midfield, making 20 appearances for the north Wales outfit before turning down a new deal.

The Minstermen now have a squad of 17, although strikers Vadaine Oliver and Jake Hyde remain on the transfer list.

Boss Jackie McNamara also expects Danny Galbraith, Michael Ingham and Callum Rzonca to agree new deals at Bootham Crescent.
