GRIMSBY TOWN have handed a one-year contract to ex-Port Vale defender Clayton McDonald.

McDonald, who stands at 6ft 6ins tall, made over 30 appearances in League Two last term, six of which came while on loan with Bristol Rovers.

The 24-year-old ended the campaign on a high, winning promotion with the Valiants, but was not offered a new deal by the Staffordshire outfit.

He has now dropped down to Conference Premier level to sign for the Mariners and is likely to appear for them in a pre-season friendly with newly-promoted Premier League club Hull City on Friday evening.
