Squires Gate to host Portuguese giants Academica

NORTH West Counties League Premier side Squires Gate will be welcoming some illustrious visitors on Thursday as top level Portuguese club Academica roll into town.

Premier side will be welcoming some illustrious visitors on Thursday as top level Portuguese club Academica roll into town.

Academica, based in the city of Coimbra, finished 15th in the Primeira Liga last term but they were playing in the Europa League just two years ago.

The Portuguese side are in England to face Preston and have also managed to cram another game in at Gate’s School Road. Quite apt, seeing as Academica are nicknamed the Students!

With friendlies for Gate’s first team already set in stone, the club’s newly formed reserve side will be taking on Academica on Thursday night, with kick-off at 7pm.

Squires Gate first team manager Dave McCann said: “It’s a great fixture for not only the club but the young lads who will take part. It will be a great test and a great game for the locals to come down and witness.”
