Rob Smith and Larry Chambers return to AFC Telford United

ONE of the most successful management teams in AFC Telford United’s history have returned to the New Bucks Head.

Boss Rob Smith and assistant Larry Chambers left Hednesford Town this morning and were quickly unveiled as the new men in charge of the Bucks, much to the delight of supporters.

They will replace former Guiseley chief Steve Kitrrick who was sacked by Telford following the 2-0 home defeat to Gainsborough on Saturday that left them bottom of the pile with just one point to their name.

During their first spell with the Bucks from 2006-10, Smith and Chambers led the club back into the Conference North, beating Witton Albion in the Northern Premier play-off final in 2007.

A year later they finished second in the Conference North but lost out to Barrow in the play-off semi-finals. They were knocked out of another semi-final in 2008-09 when York City defeated the Bucks in the FA Trophy last four, denying them a trip to Wembley.

Telford did, however, win the Setanta Shield against Forest Green Rovers and again almost made it into Non-League’s top division 12 months later. The 1-0 play-off final defeat to Gateshead meant they missed out again before the management pair left the club in April 2010.

A Telford statement read: “One of the most successful management teams at the New Bucks Head in recent history will return in time to take charge of the team for Saturday’s trip to Gloucester City.

“Rob and Larry previously joined AFC Telford United in February 2006, replacing former Northern Ireland international Bernard McNally at the helm and remained in charge until the summer of 2010.

“We welcome them back to the club and are sure that their passion for the game will re-energise everyone connected with AFC Telford.”

Chris Brindley, meanwhile, will take charge of Hednesford Town while the Pitmen search for a new manager.
