SHAUN REID has left Evo-Stik NPL Division One North leaders Warrington Town after being told his contract would not be renewed.

Reid, brother of ex-Manchester City, Sunderland and Leeds boss Peter, has taken the Yellows to the top of the table where they are currently eight points clear of Northwich Victoria.

He also famously took Warrington to the FA Cup second round last season, beating Exeter City in the first round live on the BBC.

And despite being set for more success this term, the club claim Reid asked to be released after being informed that his contract – which was up at the end of the season – would not be renewed.

Reid said: “Well what to say. Firstly I’d like to wish the players and backroom staff the best of luck for the run in. Believe. You can win it. And you deserve to win it with the work you’ve all put in.

“Also to the supporters and people of Warrington thank you for the unbelievable support and warmth in our history-making seasons. Highest league finish, FA Cup, Doodson Cup, clean sheet record, unbeaten run record. Attendances up massively. And hopefully this year a championship.

“I loved every minute of it. This town now has football club to go with its top class rugby league club.”

A club statement read: “The board of directors at the club have been discussing plans for next season and beyond as part of its longer term objectives and decided they would not be renewing the manager’s contract at the end of the current season.

“This decision has been discussed with Shaun and he asked to be released from his current contract to ensure he has the appropriate time to find the right opportunity for himself in the future. The club has agreed to this request.

“Stuart Mellish and Lee Smith will step up from their coaching roles to form a management pairing, supported by the remaining coaching team.”
