SKELMERSDALE UNITED boss Tommy Lawson will remain at the club despite seeing his budget cut as the Evo-Stik NPL Premier outfit continue to struggle.

It’s been a difficult season for Skem both on and off the pitch and Lawson’s job has been made even tougher with the news that the club has been forced to cut back on squad expenses.

United already sit second bottom of the league and have won just three of their 23 NPL Premier games so far this term.

Skem have lost nine of their last 12 fixtures and have recently seen players depart, although chairman Paul Griffiths claims that is “purely for financial reasons”.

Lawson has been in charge for over ten years, guiding the club to the Evo-Stik NPL North title in 2012-13, but a return to Step 4 looks inevitable after the boss’ budget was cut ahead of the Boxing Day trip to Marine.

Chairman Griffiths said: “You will no doubt be aware that certain players have sought to leave the club, this is purely for financial reasons.

“In light of our current league position and performances, we have suffered a decrease in attendances and sponsorships and this had had a large impact on our income stream.

“Therefore, I have informed the manager this week that we will have to cur his playing budget, and unless some serious sponsorship can be found this will be until the end of the season.

“Tommy Lawson could easily have walked away but being the man he is, he has decided to support the club and see things through.

“Believe me, he has a daunting task ahead of him but Tommy being Tommy, he has already put plans into motion to keep us moving forward, and he has all our gratitude.”
