Former Charlton Athletic defender Yado Mambo has been forced to retire from football due to a knee injury.
The 26-year-old has suffered problems with his knee before and then aggravated it again last month.
After consultation with a specialist, Mambo was told it would be best to take an early retirement from the game as further stress from playing would trouble the arthritis in his knee, leading to problems later in life.
Fleet have asked the popular central defender to remain at the Kuflink Stadium as part of their matchday staff with the role starting from Boxing Day.
Mambo made 46 appearances, scoring three goals, during his three spells with the club. He featured for Shrewsbury Town and AFC Wimbledon in the Football League and turned out for Non-League side Staines Town, Chelmsford City, Margate and Bishop’s Stortford.
Last month, Mambo went viral after appearing in Ebbsfleet’s televised match against Leyton Orient wearing the No.18 shirt – not No.5 as one eagle-eyed viewer pointed out on Twitter.
Subsequently a Mambo No.5 shirt was auctioned for more than £3,500 for Prostate Cancer UK.
Mambo posted on Instagram this afternoon: “Being told you can’t play football again because of an injury/medical reason is probably one of hardest things I’ve ever heard in my life to date.
“Heart broken doesn’t even come close to how I feel, I’ve played for some great clubs, played with/against some great players, played in front of great crowds, been coached by some great coaches.
“I’m grateful for all I’ve achieved thus far, just gutted my journey couldn’t continue. As they say one door closes another opens.”
Messages of support for the stricken defender have been pouring in from fans and his teammates.
