Alex Lawless: Cup Shock Can Spur Us On

LUTON midfielder Alex Lawless says the Hatters need to get on a winning run in the Blue Square Bet Premier immediately – or see another team lift the title in front of them for a third year in a row.

Town watched on as Crawley were presented with the championship trophy when they travelled to the Broadfield in April 2011, then again on their trip to Fleetwood on the final day of last season.

The Hatters moved back into the play-off places with Tuesday’s 6-1 thumping of Barrow, three days after Lawless hit the goal that knocked Championship side Wolves out of the FA Cup – and eight after Paul Buckle’s side suffered their EIGHTH league defeat of the season at Woking.

Remarkably, winning their three games in hand on Wrexham would take them above the leaders, and Lawless told The NLP: “It is crazy this season, with everyone beating each other, but that’s another thing we can take confidence from.

“It only takes one team to go on a run. Look at Kidderminster from the start of the season. They’ve had a run now and they were above us before the Barrow game. Cambridge are closing in, too.

“It just goes to show that we’ve got to go and get a run of wins together because if someone else does, we’re out of it.

“I’ve seen it so many times in this league, where if one team wins five or six games in a row, they are away.

“With the cup games we’ve got coming up as well, there’s going to be a few more games in hand, which is not great. But hopefully this week will be the turning point.”

For more of Alex Lawless’ thoughts on Luton’s FA Cup run, title chances and his personal battle to win over the Kenilworth Road fans, see this Sunday’s NLP.
