INTERIM boss Jon Meeney has led the tributes to Steve Morison who was sacked by Sutton United this week after a disappointing start to the new season.
The former Welsh international striker, 42, had been in charge of the National League side since January 2024 but was axed after just one win from their opening nine games.
Morison joined the U’s from Hornchurch to replace Matt Grey in January 2024 but despite leading an eight-match unbeaten run was unable to avoid relegation.
Last season, he led the club to 12th place in their first season back in Non-League and the final of the National League Cup.
Assistant Meeney, who took the team for yesterday’s 1-0 defeat at Brackley Town, said: “I’m gutted that Steve has lost his job. He brought me into the club and gave me the opportunity to come back into full-time football.
“I stepped up this year to be his assistant and it’s never nice to see someone lose their job, moreso Steve, who has become a good friend of mine.
“Ultimately now, with his best wishes and his advice, I will do this to the best of my ability for however long I’m at the helm.”
