Cureton eyes the perfect ten

Evergreen Jamie Cureton has set his sights on making goalscoring history – after continuing his playing career at the age of 50, writes JON COUCH.

Cureton, who left his role as Cambridge City manager last month, has dusted down his boots to sign for Eastern Counties League Division One North side Kings Park Rangers.

And if the former Bristol Rovers, Norwich City and Reading striker scores for his new club he will become the first player ever to net in each of the top ten tiers of English football, from the Premier League down to Step 6.

Curton famously scored his first senior goal just 13 seconds after coming on as a substitute in his league debut for Norwich against Chelsea in the Premier League on December 10, 1994.

In 1,075 senior games since then, he has scored well over 350 goals.

Announcing their star signing, the Essex Border League champions said: “Welcome to Kings Park Rangers, Mr Jamie Cureton! A man who absolutely stinks of goals,

‘Curo’ has a wealth of experience and has scored in all of the English football tiers, just one has eluded him, Step 6!

“We hope he scores more than just one for us this season but if he manages to score just one, he will be the first player ever to score a goal in every English tier from the Premier League all the way down to Step 6. The former Norwich and Colchester United legend will certainly write his name into English football folklore if he completes that feat! Welcome, Curo!”
