Having spent my Sunday and Monday as usual studying The Non-League Paper, the front page headline of ‘AWOL Edgar’ sticks in my mind as I enter the ground – especially with the rain coming down by the bucket load.
After a meeting in Peterborough, I decide that Leicester isn’t too far a diversion for a match, completely forgetting that
I will be travelling at rush hour along the crumbling back roads of rural England.
It’s a very hot day but the need for a football fix is strong. Cleethorpes Town is a team I need to visit in the Northern Counties East League and their friendly against Grimsby Town looks vaguely interesting.
My driver for the day announces we are off to Wealdstone in the Ryman Premier League on the basis that he recently discovered a ‘drop-dead-gorgeous’ matchday poster on the website and has already printed one off for me. Good friend!
Harrogate are having terrible problems with their CNG Stadium pitch and are playing a few games at other grounds in order to clear a backlog of fixtures. They haven’t played a home game since December 18!
