TAMWORTH’S Lee Smith is recovering in Intensive Care after he had his spleen removed following the Lambs’ game last night at Gainsborough Trinity.

Midfielder Smith, 24, only came on as a 65th minute substitute in the Vanarama National League match but had to be stretchered off five minutes later after a clash with Trinity’s Nicholas Bignall left him holding his chest and ribs.

He was rushed to Lincoln County Hospital where he underwent surgery in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Smith only joined the Lambs in the summer, making the switch from Evo-Stik NPL Division One South side Romulus.

A Tamworth statement said: “The club can confirm that Lee Smith underwent surgery at Lincoln County Hospital in the early hours of this morning and is now recovering in Intensive Care.

“The injury that he suffered in last night’s game at Gainsborough Trinity damaged his spleen and this was removed.

“His family are at his bedside and our thoughts and prayers are with them all.”
