National Game Awards 2017/18 in association with SCL – Fejiri Okenabirhie’s fantastic season receives recognition

The Dagenham & Redbridge frontman was selected by Three Lions boss Paul Fairclough as his England C Player of the Year.

Making the judgement based on performances seen first-hand by Fairclough, club form and the player’s attitude, Okenabirhie was not short of competition for the prize with Kidderminster Harriers midfielder Ryan Croasdale also a key feature in the ‘C’ squad over the past 12 months.
But the 22-year-old’s scintillating hat-trick against Wales in March made him a winner for good reason, as England look to back up their 3-2 win in Barry with a trip to Dublin later this month to face Ireland.
Humbled to receive the award, Okenabirhie shared his feeling of enjoyment for the Three Lions journey he’s found enjoyable so far. “Obviously, playing  for the England C team, to start with, that’s a good achievement,” the former Stevenage forward said.
“To be voted the best player this season; I never really expected it but I’m really glad that I won it – I’m proud and I’m really happy about it.
“I got a hat-trick against Wales this season; scoring three goals doesn’t happen often, so to get it, I’m really proud. From when I first played last year, I’ve really enjoyed it. Every time I’ve been away with them, I’ve really enjoyed the training and you really get looked after as well.”

Respect

Following in the footsteps of previous winners Alex Woodyard and Andy Yiadom, Okenabirhie added that Fairclough and coach Mick Payne had created an environment that makes for an overall great experience.
“It’s nice to be recognised for your performances,” he said. “You want to do well for whatever team you’re playing for, but to be individually recognised is something any player would want.
“Paul [Fairclough, manager] and Mick [Payne, coach] are great. All the games we’ve played are always competitive, so it’s a great experience and I always look forward to it.
“To win this award just tops it off.”

‘I am The Secret Footballer’ – Dave Kitson ends football’s longest guessing game

For years, football fans played detective. Every new “Secret Footballer” column dropped like a clue. The voice was too inside to be a journalist. Too sharp to be a club statement. Too honest to be anyone with a contract still to protect. Now the guessing is over...

  • July matches could ease a winter backlog

FANS’ FORUM WITH the weather getting wetter and warmer each year, surely something needs to change in the football calendar. Unfortunately, I fear that the leagues and FA are so loathe to change anything as we continue to battle through a backlog of fixtures at the end of each season....
