Two decades later, he is back. Only this time, the striker isn’t a devastated teenager. He’s a veteran of Premier League football, hundreds of Championship appearances and blockbuster transfers totalling more than £15m.
“It’s funny how things work out,” says the 34-year-old, who has joined Pools on a free transfer after leaving Rotherham at the end of last season.
