Marathonbet’s Non-League betting preview: Wrexham v Dover set to disappoint?

It’s tight at the top of the National League but sooner or later one team is going to have to stamp its authority at the summit. Game of the weekend comes in the Wrexham v Dover clash, where third takes on fourth and we reckon goals are going to come at a premium.

Both sides have been banging them in so far this term but Dover especially are watertight at the back, boasting the best goal difference in the league with 16. There are rarely over 2.5 goals scored in Dover games – just 29% of their league matches this season have seen three or more – and with both sides desperate not to lose we could be in for an edgy affair. Dover won 1-0 when the teams met at the start of the season.

Wrexham v Dover – under 2.5 total goals scored – 4/6 with Marathonbet.

We predict Wrexham/Dover might be a drab affair but that doesn’t mean the rest of the National League has to suffer.

Maidenhead travel to Hartlepool for a mid-table clash of 13th v 14th and stats suggest there should be goals in this game. Alan Devonshire’s Maidenhead side have scored more goals than league leaders Macclesfield but for all their good work up top, they’re not too fancy at the back. That’s probably why both teams have scored in more Maidenhead games (62%) than any other National League side this season.

Super Salford keep marching on at the top of the table having lost just twice all season. They just about edged past Blyth Spartans last time out at the start of December but whether the run of postponements hinders their momentum awaits to be seen. We think there could be a good chance that’ll happen which is why we’re backing Chorley, who are unbeaten in four, to win or draw this clash. Matt Jensen’s side won one and drew one against Salford last season and only just lost 1-0 to the Manchester men at the start of this campaign.

A Salford stumble could leave the door open for Brackley to close the gap at the top of the table. They host relegation candidates AFC Telford United at St James Park and despite the visitors winning last time out in the league against Tamworth, they are yet to clock consecutive National League North victories.

Title challengers Hampton & Richmond have been in scintillating form of late and are currently on an eight-game winning run in the league, aided by strike sensation Max Kretzschmar. They travel to lowly Oxford City this weekend but don’t let league position cloud your judgement – City are on their own six-game unbeaten run and will prove a tough nut to crack. They only lost the reverse fixture 1-0 back in August and that came courtesy of a controversial goal given after the linesman was overruled for an offside call. Oxford can grab at least a point here.

And finally Brighton side Whitehawk are having anything but a sunny time at the seaside down south. They sit bottom of the pile without a win all season and are certain for relegation. They travel to mid-table East Thurrock United, who aren’t in the best form of their lives themselves, but who should have enough in the tank to ensure their play-off push gets back on track. The question will be how many Whitehawk concede?

East Thurrock to win both halves v Whitehawk – 81/100 with Marathonbet.
