HEMEL HEMPSTEAD staged a remarkable late comeback to earn a point against Sutton United on Saturday – with keeper Jamie Butler netting the bizarre equaliser!
Tom Balarinwa and Dan Fitchett scored to put Sutton 2-0 up and seemingly heading for a big three points in the National League South.
Michael Richens netted what looked to be no more than a consolation goal in the dying seconds before Butler equalised in the most bizarre of circumstances.
Trying to launch a last-ditch attack, the keeper booted the ball out of his hands. His long clearance got caught in the swirling wind, took an awkward bounce and sailed over the unfortunate Ross Worner and into the net.
Hemel boss Dean Brennan said: “We have conceded a lot of goals in the 90th minute but today I thought we created enough chances in the second half to win the game.
“There is always drama when we play Sutton and today was no different.”
Sutton manager Paul Doswell added: “It was not the first time I have seen it (a keeper scoring) and I am sure it won't be the last.
“But if you are 2-0 up in the 90th minute, you expect to win. It was a good finish for the first goal and then a wind-assissted shot from the keeper.”
