Gateshead were denied victory over Premier League Newcastle by a late Ben Williams own goal on a day Tyneside united to pay their respects to a Geordie legend.
A bumper 7,200-strong crowd observed an impeccably observed one minute silence before the game to mark Kevin Keegan’s untimely passing this week at the age of 75 (see page 2).
Keegan would have been impressed by Gateshead’s tenacity and resilience against a strong Newcastle side that included four internationals and a number of Premier League stars.
