Respect is bigger than any game

I WAS unfortunate enough to attend last season’s FA Cup final and it was sad to see an almost complete absence of communal singing before kick-off. Similarly, at a recent County Senior Cup final between two noted clubs, supporters of the losing finalists vacated their seats on the final whistle ahead of the presentation ceremony. Football is a tough, competitive sport. Fans are partisan. Everyone wants to win. There can be much at stake. For the future of the game we need to see participants at all levels showing respect for opponents and hence for the game itself.
