For Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, it’s been a summer of mixed emotions.
Just six weeks ago, the 34-year-old former Arsenal, Ipswich, QPR and Bristol City striker was handed a four-year prison sentence at Chelmsford Crown Court for masterminding the importation of £600,000 worth of cannabis at London Stansted Airport.
Now, though, following his release from jail on parole last week, he has been handed a lifeline to resume his football career by National League South newcomers AFC Totton.
