Mike Williamson appointed as new South Shields head coach

Former Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Mike Williamson has been appointed as new head coach of National League North club South Shields.

The 42-year-old has been part of the Mariners Park setup over the last six months after initially working alongside his former Gateshead and MK Dons assistant manager Ian Watson as first-team coach.

Williamson then stepped into a newly created role of head of performance and culture – but he will now return to the lead role in the dugout for the first time since a disappointing spell with Carlisle United came to an end in March last year.

Mariners chairman Geoff Thompson had hinted the former Premier League star would play part in a new management team following Watson’s departure to League Two newcomers Rochdale last week.

Excited

He called Williamson “the obvious candidate” after confirming the appointment.

In a statement released on the club website, Thompson said: “Mike has quickly become a valued and influential figure within the football club.

“His leadership qualities knowledge of the game, and understanding of what we are trying to achieve made him the obvious candidate for the role.

“We are excited to see him lead the team into this new chapter and wish him every success.”

Success

The statement continued: “The club believes this appointment represents the best course of action moving forward.

“Mike has already established himself within the first-team environment, and his previous experience and success at this level align closely with the club’s ambitions for the future.

“Everyone at South Shields FC is excited to begin this new chapter under Mike’s leadership.

“We are confident that his vision, professionalism, and ambition will help drive the club forward as we continue to pursue our objectives.”

The Mariners also promised to provide more details on Williamson’s coaching staff and preparations for the new season in the coming days and weeks.
