Gary McCann leaves Hampton & Richmond Borough

South side Borough confirmed that manager Gary McCann has mutually agreed to step down from his role with immediate effect.

The decision follows a goalless home draw with sixth-placed on New Year's Day which leaves side 19th in the division with just six wins from 22 league games as they approach the half-way milestone.

McCann, a London taxi driver during his time away from , has been at the helm since 2018 and was contracted until next year.

The former boss has been a huge success with the supporters, achieving more first round appearances than any other manager within the club's history and has brought some great times to the Beveree Stadium.

The Beavers were recently acquired by the Petruzzo brothers, Stefano and Rafa. Stefano has direct experience within football after spending six years as Strategy Director at Liverpool.

A statement from the club's official website read: “It has been mutually agreed that Gary McCann will step down from his position as Manager. The Club thanks Gary who has been an integral part of the Club's history.

“The Club would also like to thank Gary and his management team for all their valuable contributions and considerable efforts over the past four years.

“The Club will now start the recruitment process for Gary's replacement. Academy Manager Steve Bates has assumed first team responsibilities on an interim basis.”

McCann wrote on twitter: “I've always asked the players to be the best version of themselves. They have been in the circumstances. I thank you for your effort.

“Always attempted to be the best version of myself. Always done the best I could but in the circumstances, it just wasn't good enough in 22/23.

“Hampton & Richmond is full of great people and I thank each and every one of you for your continued support. I wish everyone involved with the club the very best of luck. Onwards and upwards.”
