FORMER Accrington Stanley, Wrexham and Padiham striker Brett Ormerod has left Bamber Bridge and retired from from football after a long and successful career.

The 39-year-old started out at Non-League outfit Accrington and scored 32 times before a move into the professional game with Blackpool, where he would spend two different spells.

He rose to the top of the game, playing in the Premier League for the Tangerines and Southampton. He also played in the 2003 FA Cup final for the Saints against Arsenal.

He went on to represent Leeds, Wigan Athletic, Preston North End, Nottingham Forest, Oldham Athletic and Rochdale before dropping back into Non-League with Wrexham in 2012.

Ormerod played in the 2013 FA Trophy final at Wembley against Grimsby Town before leaving the Dragons the following year, signing for Step 4 side Padiham.

He went on to sign for Bamber Bridge but has now decided to retire knowing he has scored a goal in every division from the Premier League down to Step 4.

The Blackburn-born striker said: “At 39 it’s time to hang up the boots. A big thanks to family and friends and everyone who has supported me, it’s been a crazy ride.”
