■ WIDNES hit the woodwork twice as they were held to a goalless draw by Newcastle Town.
Despite a slow start, the Whites grew into the first half and went close through ex- Town man James Steele who had a powerful effort beaten away by Owen Mooney.
John McGrath then curled one wide, while Newcastle threatened on the stroke of half-time, but Challis Johnson couldn’t get a shot away despite a decent opening. But Widnes will be the side most disappointed by the result as they twice hit the frame of the goal within six second-half minutes.
