■LEAGUE leaders Widnes maintained their six-point advantage at the top, but they had to earn their victory against 10-man Bootle.
They raced into a fourth-minute lead when Jack McGowan shrugged Tom Hannigan off the ball and finished brilliantly beyond Tony Thompson. Bootle proved to be stubborn opposition, but Widnes still created chances, notably when James Steele headed just over from Sam Bird’s long throw-in.
The Bucks went in at half-time level when Ben Hodkinson dispatched a penalty late on after Conor Harwood was fouled.
