The 36-year-old left on Monday morning following Saturday’s 4-0 home defeat to Cheltenham Town, a result that left them 22nd in the and five points from safety.

Carden took charge of the Sandgrounders following Gary Brabin’s decision to join Everton as a coach in January, stepping up from his role as assistant to become first team manager.

He signed a new deal in the summer after keeping Southport in ‘s top tier last season but his squad have been unable to find any real consistency this term.

A club statement read: “Paul Carden has left Southport Club by mutual consent this morning (Monday).

“The Southport FC Board would like to thank Paul for all his professionalism, efforts and dedication to the job and wish him well in his future football career.
“Results this season just have not been achieved despite Paul working very hard, putting together a talented  squad of players.”
