RUDY FUNK has left Scarborough Athletic after Monday night’s 3-0 defeat at Harrogate Railway Athletic, claiming the reason is “absolutely nothing to do with football”.

Funk took charge at the Seadogs in 2011 and led them to promotion from the Northern Counties East League Premier.

They currently sit fifth in the Evo-Stik NPL Division One North after Monday’s defeat but the former Shirebrook Town, Rainworth and Eastwood boss says promises have not been kept.

Funk said: “I’m sure our chairman will release a statement and the only thing I can say is that people make agreements and promises in life.

“I was brought up believing that once you’ve shook hands you honour that. This is absolutely nothing to do with football. Recently I have felt very uncomfortable with certain things and it has affected me.

“Over the three-and-a-half years I’ve been at Scarborough, we’ve had some fantastic sides and fantastic players and I loved them like my own kids.

“The love between myself and the fans was beyond any description. At the moment I just want to remember all the good times we’ve had.”

A club statement read: “Scarborough Athletic FC can confirm the departure of our long-serving manager Rudy Funk, following a hugely popular and successful spell at the helm.

“Club chairman Dave Holland spoke briefly on Monday night of his sadness at the event, acknowledging both Rudy’s popularity with the fans and his success on the field during his stay at the club.

“The club has moved quickly to appoint assistant managers Bryan Hughes and Paul Foot to take over in the interim. Bryan and Paul will be holding training as usual on Thursday and have begun making plans for Saturday’s tough home game against Northwich Victoria.”
