December is here, the advent calendars are up, and that also means the prospect of reviewing the Emirates FA Cup 2nd round on this week’s podcast.
Which Vanarama National League clubs saw the doors open to a potential 3rd round blockbuster tie, and which saw the doors open, only to find no reward behind it, just the sign marked ‘Exit’?
Chesterfield were one of the sides to progress, and before their televised victory at Salford City, their manager James Rowe sat down with our own Rob Worrall for an in-depth chat, reviewing his first year in charge at the club.
James spoke about the need to stay humble, the need for consistency, his influences and his path into management, fatherhood, optimising his squad, the massive coup of luring Kabongo Tshimanga to the Technique Stadium and his views on three up, three down between the National League and EFL.
Joining the Spireites in Round 3 are fellow National League sides Yeovil Town and Boreham Wood, plus Kidderminster Harriers of the Vanarama National League North. The team of of Luke, Chris and Dickie reviewed those matches, along with tales of what might have been involving Stockport County and Gateshead.
The National League continued for those sides no longer in the Cup, and both Bromley and Wrexham capitalised on Chesterfield and Boreham Wood’s focus being elsewhere to close the gap at the top.
In the National League North, it was ‘one in, and one out’ as Blyth Spartans welcomed a new manager and Spennymoor Town said goodbye to theirs. The appointment of Terry Mitchell might have had some asking “Terry Who?”; Dickie fills in the gaps on Blyth’s new gaffer, and looks at the rest of the North, where it was far from a quiet weekend!
The South also fell under the spotlight, as Dartford got back to winning ways in less than convincing fashion, Oxford City made their bid to be considered the division’s ‘dark horses’ in what is still a wide-open chase for promotion.
