Rene’s Wonder Goal Not Enough To Steer Saints Through

St Neot’s left-back Rene Steer netted the goal of his life on Tuesday but saw his side crash out of the FA Cup.

WHEN a left-back runs on to a ball 40 yards from goal and looks set to shoot, most spectators expect to see his effort end up in row Z.

That was probably where most St Neots Town supporters imagined Rene Steer’s long-range effort would end up in their FA Cup Second Round Qualifying replay with Canvey Island on Tuesday night.

But the former Arsenal youngster instead smashed a wonder strike in off the underside of the bar to score what is an early frontrunner for goal of the season.

The 23-year-old’s thunderbolt draw the match level at 1-1 but the Saints suffered late heartbreak when Spencer Bellotti netted his second of the night in the 90th minute to put Canvey through.

St Neots return to Southern League Premier Division action this weekend and travel to tenth-placed Hungerford Town.

Geoff Hurst was also aiming for row Z at Wembley, when we famously thought it was all over, there’s nothing wrong with that…!
What a corker this goal from Rene Steer is. Its always worth a shot from there and always a bit of a freak of it goes in (at every level), but it looks so good on TV and this is definitely a good candidate for Goal of the Season…!
