Steve Kinniburgh tasked with saving Corby Town after boss Gary Mills’ sacking

STEVE KINNIBURGH has been tasked with saving Corby Town from a second successive relegation after boss Gary Mills was sacked with just three games of the season remaining.

Former Rugby Town boss Mills replaced Tommy Wright at the Steelmen in October after the club experienced a tough start to life back at Step 3 following relegation from the National League North last term.

Corby have been struggling in and around the relegation places in the Evo-Stik NPL Premier all season and Saturday’s 2-0 home defeat to play-off chasing Whitby left them three points adrift of safety.

The Steelmen hope a management reshuffle will mean a quick upturn in results with academy director Kinniburgh taking over as caretaker boss for the rest of the season.

Mills’ assistant David Bell also remains at the club as they prepare for trips to Stafford Rangers and Coalville Town as well as a home game against Grantham Town.

Kinniburgh told the club’s website: “I will see it through with David and the two of us will stick our heads together and look at what we need to be doing.

“There’s been a bit of a negative vibe just recently and the results have not really helped but we will concentrate on creating a positive atmosphere and letting these boys go out and express themselves.

“We have three games to go and we have a chance to stay up. We want to make that happen and ensure there are smiles on faces at the end of the season.”

Following Mills’ sacking, a Corby statement read: “Corby Town have relieved Gary Mills of his duties as first team manager.

“The Steelmen currently sit 21st in the table and are without a win in the last five games. Steve Kinniburgh has been placed in temporary charge of the first team until the end of the season.

“We would like to thank Gary for his hard work since joining the club and wish him the best in his future career.”
