■BURY Town had the majority of the chances but still suffered defeat after spurning them all.
A mostly uneventful first half saw Basildon snatch the lead after 45 minutes, when Declan Nche battled to win the ball just outside the Bury box before his cross was cleared only as far as Steven Sardina.
Sardina smashed a low strike through a crowded area and into the net.
Bury had a chance early in the second half when Will Gardener’s thumping shot hit the underside of the bar and bounced on the line before it was cleared.
