Solihull Moors appoint new head coach as they target Hednesford boss Liam McDonald

SOLIHULL MOORS have appointed former Birmingham City assistant manager Keith Bertschin as their new head coach and the club are also expected to bring in Hednesford Town boss Liam McDonald.

Moors announced yesterday that 60-year-old Bertschin, who served as Steve Bruce’s assistant at Birmingham, Wigan Athletic, Sunderland and Hull City, had been named head coach but that a “further managerial appointment” would also be made.

Hednesford confirmed via a club statement that they had been approached by the National League outfit in regards to speaking to McDonald.

The NLP understands that he is expected to join Solihull as the club’s new manager and will work alongside the experienced Bertschin as the Moors look to fill the void left by Marcus Bignot, who left for League Two side Grimsby Town earlier this week.

Bignot took former Mansfield coach Micky Moore with him to Blundell Park while his assistant Gary Whild, the former Kidderminster boss, decided to leave Damson Park.

McDonald has caught the eye in his brief managerial career so far, transforming a struggling Redditch side into Step 3 promotion contenders with a team full of exciting young talent.

The Reds finished second in the Southern Premier last term but lost in the play-offs to Leamington before McDonald made the switch to Evo-Stik NPL Premier side Hednesford, who had just been relegated from the National League North.

While McDonald hasn’t been at Keys Park for long, he looks set to move to Damson Park with the Moors sitting 15th in Non-League‘s top tier.

On Bertschin’s appointment, a Solihull statement read: “The vastly-experienced coach takes charge with immediate effect and will be in the home dugout for Saturday’s visit of Dover Athletic.
