■ EAST Grinstead fell just short as they were beaten by VCD Athletic despite a spirited second-half fightback.
The game began evenly with little created until the 29th minute when a long ball freed VCD’s Alfie Evans. His cross was spilled by Rex Porter and Charlie Hartley reacted quickest to poke home. Four minutes later, VCD doubled their lead from a disputed penalty, Hartley converting confidently.
Grinstead made changes at the break and pressed hard.
